In August 2006 Daryl and I took a family holiday in the Dordogne. France has always had a special pull for me from childhood holidays spent touring the beautiful country in a caravan with my parents and brother.
We booked for 2 weeks in a Gite and I have to say it wasn’t the best weather for a holiday, in fact I think it rained for 8 days out of the 14 . But, what it lacked in sunshine it made up for with places to visit, fabulous food and wine and a pace of life we suddenly started to hanker for. We returned home and started to think, talk and plan and decided very quickly, we wanted to buy a house in France with a view to moving there to live sooner rather than later. That was the easy part.
We needed to be able to live when we moved , so the project had to be able to generate an income. We started to look for properties that would offer self catering holiday let potential and allow us to finance the project until we could sell up in the UK and move out there full time.
Over the next few years we researched hundreds of properties on the internet made many visits to the area and eventually found Les Girouteaux only a few miles from where we stayed on holiday at Les Eyzies.
We purchased the house in October 2009. It was quite sad and run down but most of the immediate work was cosmetic and a big external tidy up. Over the next few months we worked hard, had a swimming pool installed, cleared the grounds, created garden space in what was effectively a field, decorated, scrubbed and polished the houses and in June 2010 we opened for our first season. We have continued to renovate and refurbish each year and we now have three lovely, 4 Star rated, self catering cottages which have continued to go from strength to strength each year.
